Larnaka, jedno z najstarszych miast Cypru, ma bogatą historię sięgającą starożytności i łączy się z wieloma mitami oraz opowieściami. Najsłynniejsza legenda Larnaki dotyczy postaci Świętego Łazarza – tego samego, którego Jezus wskrzesił z martwych według Biblii. To opowieść, która łączy w sobie elementy religii, historii i mistyki.

Legenda o Świętym Łazarzu i powstaniu Larnaki

Po cudownym wskrzeszeniu przez Jezusa, Łazarz był zmuszony opuścić Judeę z powodu prześladowań. Wraz z grupą chrześcijan uciekł morzem i dotarł na Cypr. Tam, w miejscu dzisiejszej Larnaki, osiedlił się i przez wiele lat głosił słowo Boże. Mieszkańcy miasta, wtedy znanego jako Kition, przyjęli go z szacunkiem i wkrótce stali się jego uczniami.

Łazarz został pierwszym biskupem Kition i żył tam aż do swojej naturalnej śmierci. Po jego odejściu, według legendy, mieszkańcy pochowali go z wielkimi honorami, a nad jego grobem wzniesiono kościół. W średniowieczu, gdy miejsce to odkryto na nowo, na marmurowym grobie znaleziono inskrypcję:
„Łazarz, przyjaciel Chrystusa”.

Z czasem wokół tego świętego miejsca rozwinęło się nowe miasto – Larnaka, którego nazwa według niektórych pochodzi od greckiego słowa larnax (λάρναξ), oznaczającego sarkofag lub kamienną trumnę, nawiązując właśnie do grobu Łazarza.

To właśnie w Larnace znajduje się dziś Kościół Świętego Łazarza, który jest jednym z najważniejszych zabytków religijnych na Cyprze.

Larnaca, one of the oldest cities in Cyprus, has a rich history dating back to antiquity and is associated with many myths and stories. The most famous legend of Larnaca concerns the figure of Saint Lazarus – the same one whom Jesus raised from the dead according to the Bible. It is a story that combines elements of religion, history and mysticism.

The Legend of Saint Lazarus and the Founding of Larnaca

After his miraculous resurrection by Jesus, Lazarus was forced to leave Judea due to persecution. Together with a group of Christians, he escaped by sea and reached Cyprus. There, in the place of present-day Larnaca, he settled and for many years preached the word of God. The inhabitants of the city, then known as Kition, welcomed him with respect and soon became his disciples.

Lazarus became the first bishop of Kition and lived there until his natural death. After his departure, according to legend, the inhabitants buried him with great honors, and a church was built over his grave. In the Middle Ages, when the site was rediscovered, an inscription was found on the marble tomb: “Lazarus, friend of Christ”.

Over time, a new city developed around this holy place – Larnaca, whose name, according to some, comes from the Greek word larnax (λάρναξ), meaning a sarcophagus or stone coffin, referring to the tomb of Lazarus.

It is in Larnaca that the Church of Saint Lazarus is located today, which is one of the most important religious monuments in Cyprus.
